Register Now » The ACI Virtual Concrete Convention – known as the world’s gathering place for advancing concrete – will be held virtually from March 28-April 1, 2021, and will feature 45 total sessions. All attendees will be provided the opportunity to advance their knowledge and earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs)/Professional Development Hours (PDHs). The featured session titled Productivity in the Concrete Industry – Why Has it Stagnated and How Can ACI Help?is moderated by Cary S. Kopczynski, and asks why productivity in the U.S. construction industry has been flat for 50 years, while productivity of U.S. industry in general has nearly doubled in that same time frame. Why? And what can ACI do about it? This session will explore answers to these and other questions and will include presentations from designers and contractors offering their perspectives on how ACI can help confront this very important industry issue. Session Speakers: Cary S. Kopczynski ACI Vice President Cary Kopczynski PE, SE, FACI, FPTI is CEO and Senior Principal of Cary Kopczynski & Company (CKC), an award winning structural engineering firm with offices in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago. The firm has won over seventy-five regional, national, and international awards, and has been selected several times by Zweig White and Structural Engineer magazine as a top structural engineering firm to work for. Mr. Kopczynski is a recognized expert in the design of reinforced concrete and post tensioned concrete building structures. He has authored numerous articles in the fields of structural analysis, design, and construction. Oscar R. Antommattei Oscar R. Antommattei is an ACI Fellow and Chief Concrete Engineer at Kiewit Engineering Group, Inc. Mr. Antommattei is a licensed civil engineer with over 20 years of industry experience in the fields of general construction, building systems, structural inspection, quality control, production of concrete, research/development, and forensic investigations of construction, structures and materials. Mr. Antommattei was chosen as one of the “2019 Most Influential People in Concrete Construction” by Concrete Construction magazine. Michael J. Schneider ACI Past President Michael J. Schneider is the Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer for Baker Concrete Construction, Inc. Mr. Schneider is responsible for safety across all Baker entities, held a large role in starting the Baker University Learning Department, and stands as the company champion of Baker’s Incident & Injury Free (IIF) Program. Mr. Schneider currently serves as chairman of the ACI Foundation and chairman of the National Steering Committee of the Concrete Industry Management Program (CIM). Mario Garza Mario Garza is the Senior Director at the Barton Malow Company, which provides construction management, design-build, program management, general contracting, technology, and equipment installation services throughout its 15 offices in North America. In 1998, Mr. Garza graduated with a BSE in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan. Mr. Garza is also a Vice President of the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC). Michael L. Tholen Michael L. Tholen, Ph.D., P.E., is the Managing Director, Engineering and Professional Development, at the American Concrete Institute. He received a BS in architectural engineering, with distinction, in 1992, an MS in civil engineering in 1995, and his Ph.D. in civil engineering in 1996 from the University of Kansas. Prior to joining ACI, Dr. Tholen spent 8 years as a structural engineer in the Aviation and Architecture Division at the Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company. Learning Objectives: (1) Define constructability as it relates to concrete construction; (2) Review the causes leading to stagnated construction productivity over the last fifty years; (3) Describe the importance of constructability in construction productivity and the role that ACI documents play in improving it; (4) Explain why the solutions require that all industry stakeholders – owners, designers, contractors, and others – understand and embrace the problem.
