Delmar L. Bloem Distinguished Service Award

ACI Commemorative Lecture Series

Young Professional Essay Contest

ACI awards are granted by the Board of Direction on the recommendation of an Awards Committee. The designated recipients of the awards are invited to attend The ACI Concrete Convention and Exposition in the spring to receive the awards.

Delmar L. Bloem Distinguished Service Award

The Institute established a Distinguished Service Award in 1969 to recognize noteworthy work on ACI technical committees. The name of the award was changed to the Delmar L. Bloem Distinguished Service Award in 1972 in honor of the late Delmar Bloem who had demonstrated, over a period of many years, the characteristics and dedication required for the award. The award is given to a current (or recent) chair of a technical committee, or under special circumstances, to deserving individuals other than committee chairs, in recognition of outstanding performance.

One award may be given each year; however, there may be none or more than one recipient in any particular year.

Nominators will submit to ACI Headquarters an email or letter emphasizing the chair or committee member's outstanding performance on a particular committee.

Nominations submitted by January 31 will be considered by TAC at the spring meeting. TAC approves the candidates at their summer meeting, and submits names and citations to the Board for approval in the fall. The awards are granted the following spring.

2017 Young Professional Essay ContestApplication form now available

The ACI Young Professional Essay Contest is sponsored by ACI Committee S-806, the Young Professional Activities Committee. The contest is open to those who have been in a concrete or construction-related industry for less than 8 years. Years spent as a full-time student studying a construction-related field do not count toward that number.

Selection of the winning essay will be made by a panel of concrete professionals during the Spring Convention. The winner will be recognized during the Fall Convention and receive a $400 prize, meant to support travel, as well as a waiver of convention fees ($493 value). Click here for the application form.

“Young Professionals: Listen, Learn & Pass It On,” by Shane Maxemow

Shane Maxemow hails from Tampa, FL, and attended the University of South Florida (Go Bulls!) where he studied structural engineering. During college, he worked for the civil engineering firm Bayside Engineering doing a multitude of tasks, ranging from roadway design to drainage designs. He received an undergraduate and graduate degree in May 2012. Following graduation, he worked for the structural firm BillerReinhart where he worked on design and restoration of all types of structures (concrete bridges to carbon fiber structures). BillerReinhart specializes in restoration of concrete structures. Currently he is working in Washington, DC, for the firm Robert Silman doing structural design, where he has worked on a wide range of projects from the Smithsonian Castle to Mt. Vernon. His goal is to become an innovative structural engineer with a portfolio of amazing creative works. To read his essay, click here.

She is also a young member of TRB Committees AFN20, Properties of Concrete, and AFN30, Durability of Concrete. She has been published in several journal and conference papers covering the topics of performance-based mixture design and sustainability. To read her essay, click here.

ACI Commemorative Lecture Series

The R. E. Davis Lecture Series began in 1972 and was replaced by the Phil M. Ferguson Lecture Series in 1987. The ACI Commemorative Lecture Series replaced the expired Phil M. Ferguson Lecture Series in the fall of 1998. The lectures are funded through ACI's General Accounts.

The ACI Commemorative Lecture Series was established on a multi-year cycle to commemorate prominent deceased members. Each year, a speaker is selected by a board committee appointed by ACI's president, with the lecture being presented at the following fall convention. The first Commemorative Lecture Series (1998-2000) was in honor of George Winter. The second Commemorative Lecture Series (2001-2005) was in honor of Lewis H. Tuthill. The Third Commemorative Lecture Series was in honor of Hardy Cross. The Fourth Commemorative Lecture Series was in honor of Katharine and Bryant Mather.

The lecture subjects are chosen by the speaker and can relate to the entire range of Institute interest. The only qualification requirement for a speaker is that he or she is outstanding in the concrete field. An appropriate plaque is given to each speaker as a memento.
