ACI’s new Masonry Testing Certification Programs will be presented at two conferences in the next few months. ACI’s Certification Department officially launched the Masonry Field Testing Technician and the Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician programs last Fall with The Masonry Society presenting sessions in Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Structures Congress, taking place in Portland, Oregon, April 23-25, 2015, and the 12th North American Masonry Conference, University of Colorado, Denver, CO, May 17-20, 2015, will both include the informational presentation, “New Programs for Educating and Certifying Masonry Testing Technicians.” The presentations will cover the Masonry Testing Technician programs that were developed by ACI Subcommittee C601-C, Masonry Testing Technicians to help improve the quality of masonry construction. The programs provide certification to those technicians working in the laboratory or in the field who can demonstrate the technical knowledge and skills required for sampling and testing of masonry units, mortars, grout, and prisms and are based on content from ASTM specifications. Both new programs have the support of The Masonry Society, the National Concrete Masonry Association, and the Portland Cement Association, and representatives from these associations played key roles in helping develop the programs. The Masonry Society will be a National Sponsor for this program. ACI is encouraging its certification sponsoring groups to conduct the new programs. The Masonry Society is also available to help any sponsoring group that is interested in offering the Masonry Testing Technician programs. For the masonry industry, implementation of testing certifications is vital. “Developing these programs filled an important need within the testing and inspection community,” said Chris Robinson, Chair of ACI Committee C670, Masonry Technician Certification. Certification continues to be an important and required part of the construction industry – demonstrating to employers and clients that staff are knowledgeable in a particular area and that a reputable organization is willing to attest to their skill set.
