Special Lunches and Tours are on the agenda at the ACI Fall Convention in Washington D.C. in October 2014. Sunday, October 26, 2014 11:30 am – 1:30 pm International Lunch—You’re invited to join Dr. Man-Chung Tang, Chairman of the Board for TY Lin International as the special guest speaker for the International Lunch. Dr. Tang will give a special presentation highlighting Recent Concrete Bridges in China. China has built a large number of concrete bridges in the last 40 years: girder bridges, cable-stayed bridges, extradosed bridges, arch bridges and even suspension bridges in concrete. Learn more here about this lunch and presentation. 1.00 pm – 3:00 pm Meridian Hill Park Walking Tour—Walk to Meridian Hill Park, which features many works of ACI pioneer John Earley, for a two hour guided tour. Meridian Hill Park is an extraordinary historic resource for its craftsmanship and the integrity of its built elements. It is one of the first projects to use exposed aggregate concrete for architectural expression and is an outstanding accomplishment of neoclassical park design in the United States. Monday, October 27, 2014 11:30 am – 1:30 pm Student Lunch—Dr. Tanya Komas, Director and Professor at the Concrete Industry Management program at California State University, will be giving a presentation titled “Concrete Evaluation, Preservation, and Repair at Two Important Historic Sites: Pointe du Hoc, Normandy, France, and Alcatraz Island, San Francisco.” This lunch is free to students who register by September 28, 2014. Tuesday, October 28, 2014 11:30 am – 1:30 pm Contractors’ Day Lunch—A special presentation by Keith Couch, Clark Construction, and Gwyon Nelson, Kiewit, will be held during this lunch discussing Phase Two of the Dulles Metrorail Extension. This $2.7 billion mega project is one of the area's largest infrastructure projects. Couch and Nelson will present an overview of the project with some interesting specifics on the challenges they are facing. Wednesday, October 29, 2014 8:00 am – 12:00 pm John Earley Guided Tour—This tour will take you on a guided motor coach tour with stops to visit outstanding Earley Studio projects in the nation's capital. Bryan Blundell will tell the history of John J. Earley's innovation and highlight distinctive features at Meridian Hill Park, the Shrine of the Sacred Heart, and the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America. 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm Sustainability Lunch—Keynote speaker Henry Green, President, National Institute on Building Sciences, will share his insight on the importance of resilience in making our infrastructure safer, more secure, and able to protect us against natural disasters. 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm National Building Museum Exhibit Tour—Following the Concrete Sustainability Lunch, Attendees will travel by motor coach to the National Building Museum for a tour of the “Designing for Disaster” exhibit. The exhibit examines how we assess risks from natural hazards and how we can create policies, plans, and designs yielding safer, more disaster-resilient communities.
