Description

The one-way and two-way shear provisions for reinforced concrete were changed in the 2019 ACI Committee 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary. Relationships in ACI 318-14 for calculating the concrete contribution in one-way shear resistance (Vc) in reinforced concrete have been replaced with one general relationship that considers the combined effects of member depth, percentage of longitudinal reinforcement, and the effect of axial stress on predicted shear stress capacity. Two-way shear equations now include effects of member depth as well as change to the minimum amount of flexural reinforcement. Changes also occurred in the strut-and-tie model provisions. The presentation will provide an introduction to the changes and the reasons behind the changes.

Learning Objectives:

1. Summarize the changes to the one-way reinforced concrete shear equations.

2. Describe the impact that member depth and low flexural reinforcement ratio have on concrete shear capacity.

3. Explain the changes to the two-way reinforced concrete shear equation.

4. Review the changes to strut-and-tie model provisions.
