This module is based on a design example that reviews the design of a buried concrete basement wall using the ACI 318-19 design code. The example includes designer’s assumptions; calculation of loads; determination of factored shear and moment from soil pressure; an overview of ACI 318 Chapter 11 wall requirements; shear, flexural and axial design calculations; and verification of reinforcement assumptions. Also included are notes and discussion items that should be considered when designing a basement wall.
Although it may be helpful to have a copy of ACI 318-19, “Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary” available as you work this design example, it is not necessary to successfully complete this module.
This design example was developed by ACI Committee E702 and approved by the ACI Educational Activities Committee.

(1) Discuss common design techniques used to account for soil compaction pressure for short walls;
(2) Recognize strategies that a designer can take to limit constructability concerns and associated cost impacts;
(3) Know which sections of the ACI 318-19 design code contain the maximum reinforcement spacing and lap length reinforcement requirements; and
(4) Understand when slenderness effects should be considered for wall design.
