Description

Flow properties of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) are greatly affected by mixing and placement. The objective of this course is to report on recent advances in mixing, in-transit measuring, rheology control, and pumping of SCC. The course will highlight case studies of signature projects intended to push the envelope in processing and placement of SCC and semi-SCC. This includes extended workability retention, the development of novel responsive admixtures for rheology control during placement, as well as pumping pressure prediction, and the effect of pumping on concrete performance. The course should be of interest to concrete producers, material suppliers, contractors, consultants, researchers, and students.

Table of Contents

Learning Objectives

1. Discuss quality assurance procedures in the successful planning materials and design mixed, delivering, and placement of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mixtures, including pre-placement meetings.

2. Explain the influence of yield stress and plastic viscosity of SCC on static and dynamic stability properties as SCC flows into and fills formwork with minimal segregation and how stability of SCC impacts hardened strength.

3. Discuss planning for workable mixture proportioning, processing techniques, pumping and placing requirements for unique high-rise building columns that used SCC as fill concrete in steel encased columns, and the need to demonstrate quality of SCC using column mockups.

4. Recall the effect of rheological characteristics on the pumping pressures needed to pump self-consolidating concrete over long lengths of pipes for high rise construction projects, including overcoming shear stresses in the SCC as it flows though pipes.
