Field studies, laboratory testing, and modeling of chloride concentration limits and threshold levels that initiate reinforcement corrosion vary in their predictive abilities. Corrosion initiation measurements for portland and blended cement concretes can lead to better service life predictions. However, chloride limits vary across industry guides and specifications. This course covers material sources of chlorides and clarifies ACI’s allowed chloride limits for concrete used in different types of structures. The effects of calcium chloride diffusion and chloride binding at reinforcing bars on time to corrosion are also explored.
