Abstract:
A prestressed concrete honeycomb barge used as a floating platform to support a phosphate mining processing facility was constructed in Singapore and towed to Baja, California. The barge’s honeycomb structural system was constructed by both cast-in-place and precast methods. The barge has excellent hull rigidity, durability, and towing characteristics. By floating a mineral processing plant on this concrete barge, the mining of low-grade phosphate ore was made economically feasible.
