Abstract:
The method of analyzing shear walls which treats a row of openings as a continuous connecting medium can show significant error when the bending stiffness of a wall section, which is flexible in comparison with the adiacent section, approaches that of the connecting beams. A criterion is developed for assessing when this effect may be important. Comparison is made with a more accurate frame analysis.
