Abstract:
Experimental research on the behavior of continuous structural reinforced concrete has frequently used the total applied load as the criteria for the performance of externally indeterminate test specimens. As the need increases for a clearer understanding of the contribution of each cross section to structural integrity, investigators will find it necessary to confirm experimental boundary conditions by measurement of reactive components and to avoid unconfirmed assumptions of an external equilibrium state. For reinforced concrete in particular, the true moment at a section cannot be obtained by strain measurement, nor can realistic stiffness properties be calculated for use in elastic analyses for internal moments. The measurement and adustabilityof redundant reactive components are necessary to a modern and true interpretation of the performance and behavior of statically indeterminate structures of reinforced concrete. An example of the interaction of internal moments in an externally indeterminate frame is presented and the performance interpreted in the light of an early failing stage for the first critical cross section.
