Abstract:
Although concentric Ultra High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) columns under pure axial load have been investigated and reported in the literature, more understanding is needed on the behavior and design of eccentrically loaded UHPFRC columns. Covering this research gap is the aim of the proposed research herein. The UHPFRC material used features the inclusion of Carbon Nanofibers (CNF) that gives the material an outstanding durability of 100+ years’ service lifetime and increases the first tensile crack load and the tensile hardening ratio of the material. This material has high early compressive strength of about 99 MPa at the age of one curing day. Small scale CNF-UHPFRC circular columns will be tested under axial load at varying eccentricities ranging from 0 to 0.4D, where D is the diameter. The percentage of steel fiber content will be varied including 1, 2 and 3% by volume. These columns will be reinforced longitudinally with steel bars and transversely with light reinforcements to preserve the steel cage’s integrity. The performance of the columns will then be assessed when establishing the experimental load-moment interaction diagrams. Analytical interaction diagrams will also be developed based on the ACI provisions. Improved design guidance and standardizations for UHPFRC columns will be provided after validating the hypothesis that ACI factors are very conservative when applied to the development of UHPFRC columns’ interaction diagrams.
