Abstract:
There has been much discussion about the benefits of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) in the construction sector over recent years. By developing designs around a range of standard factory-made components, DfMA delivers better quality, faster and safer installation and better value. Laing O’Rourke has made a significant investment over the last eight years in a strategy to transform traditional construction into a process of offsite manufacture of components and sub-assemblies, with the site focussed on logistics and assembly. This paper provides an overview of this strategy and focuses on the structural aspects of project delivery and how the approach has been used to deliver DfMA solutions in residential, commercial and infrastructure related projects, together with two examples of innovations being developed to aid this process.
