Abstract:

In the second of two articles on the topic of ϕ-factors, the authors review notable structural failures in various concrete and steel structures and discuss the contributing causes. Based on their findings, human errors have a far greater influence on collapse than the load and strength reduction factors. Therefore, there is room to adjust the ϕ-factor methodology without jeopardizing real safety. The authors suggest changes to the ϕ-factor structure that would make ϕ-factors easier to use while not reducing real safety.
