Abstract:
Selected experimental data on the strength of slab-column edge connections transferring moment perpendicular to the edge are reviewed. The eccentric shear stress model that forms the basis of design according to the ACI Building Code (ACI 318-83) is found to not correlate well with the data. An alternate analysis model is proposed assuming that moment transfer strength is limited solely by available flexural reinforcement within an effective transfer width and is not influenced by connection shear. The proposed model correlates well with the experimental data and simplifies the design and analysis process.
