Elastomeric bearings are poorly understood by many engineers, as is illustrated by the variations in engineering practice and design specifications. This paper reviews the fundamentals of bearing behavior, where knowledge is most seriously lacking. Major specifications of the world are then reviewed, comparing the capacities each of them attribute to a range of bearings. Based on this comparison and on theoretical and experimental research results, a new design method was developed and is presented as a replacement for the existing AASHTO specifications.
