The session will feature presentations of variety of structures including high-rise buildings as well as megaprojects such as an 8 mile long concrete canal redevelopment project. The presenters will cover in detail new trends and challenges of designing high-performing structures in order to achieve longer service life cycles. The session will focus on utlizing a combination of technolgoies in order to balance cost, environmental impact, speed and performance of structures.

Learning Objectives:
(1) Discuss the highlights of the construction of a 8 Mile long Canal Redevelopment Project;
(2) Summarize the construction sequence and methodology of a combination of precast and cast in situ concrete technology;
(3) Evaluate the use of precast construction and fabrication facilities;
(4) Report on utilizing voided slab systems to reduce cost and environmental impact without compromising with the performance of the structure.

Description: India with a population of 1.4 Billion is one of the largest and fastest growing economies in the world. India which has a predominantly rural economy is now urbanising at a fast pace and by 2030, 50% that is almost 800 Million people will live in cities. With cities growing at a very fast pace, large infrastructure projects in the Transportation and Water Sector are being implemented as never before. Apurva Parikh will give a brief outline of one such project in the city of Ahmedabad in Western India. This city has a 7 million population and is preparing to bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics. The project is about the transformation of a canal cum drain, passing through densely populated areas of the city, using a combination of precast and cast in situ technologies so as to ensure the conversion of the open drain system to closed drain system without stopping water supply for long periods.
