Real-world changes are happening to the concrete industry as we turn towards greener cements and concrete. How do these changes effect contractors/finishers? How do ready-mix producers better understand the end cause and effects of changes? What can be done to understand the potential causes and correct them ahead of time? This session will present data from two full scale project side-by-side case studies. We will dive into the unintended consequences resulting from the change to Type IL cement. What was learned? How did we partner with all stakeholders to isolate the issues and find solutions to provide a quality product for the owner/developer? The goal of this mini session will be to present the results, open up discussion and encourage solution-based interaction with all stakeholders.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Assess the potential influence of changing cement Types on the performance of concrete mixtures;
(2) Discuss the impact that variability in cement chemistry and manufacturing plays on the contractor's ability to successfully place and finish concrete
(3) Recognize the importance of open dialogue with all stakeholders as it relates to success in the finished concrete product;
(4) Identify the risks associated with ambient and thermal changes in concrete placing and finishing operations.

This session is sponsored by NEU: an ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete. The session will provide information on existing and new materials and technologies that have shown strong potential to play a significant role in CO2 emissions reductions in the concrete industry and considerations for the wise use of materials and design aspects towards reducing CO2 emissions in concrete construction. This session will be geared toward all stakeholders, researchers, and students in the concrete industry.

Learning Objectives:
(1) Identify low-carbon concrete materials and technologies and the importance of validation/verification of new materials and technologies;
(2) Demonstrate low-carbon concrete applications;
(3) Discuss the importance of accurate quantification of material properties to reduce the GWP of Concrete;
(4) Discuss the importance of appropriate transition design towards carbon neutral concrete.

(2) Identify how slag cement supports sustainability goals in concrete construction;
(3) Identify how slag cement can be uniquely utilized in 6 project categories;
(4) Identify how slag cement increases long-term durability in the winning research project: Utilization of Supplementary Cementitious Materials for Cementing Enhanced Geothermal Wells.

Early age cracking in concrete flatwork and paving has been an issue for as long as concrete has been finished. Experience has indicated the cracking is magnified in locations where humidity is low and thermal changes are rapid. Additionally, problems are magnified when the slab is placed directly over vapor retarder. This session will focus on understanding how the temperature in the slab changes as the placement progresses and how placing and finishing strategies can be altered to overcome thermal stresses.

Learning Objectives:
(1) Explain the influence of thermal changes in flatwork placing and finishing;
(2) List factors that contribute to varying temperatures in concrete flatwork;
(3) Identify the risks associated with high temperature swings in concrete flatwork and understand when all reasonable precautions are taken by the contractor to avoid impacts from ambient conditions, changes in material properties beyond their control can have potentially disastrous impacts on the outcome of the finish;
(4) Recognize why cracking may occur in some environments and not in others.
