Technical Questions

ACI Committees, Membership, and Staff have answered common questions on a variety of concrete related topics.

The effect of pozzolans on freezing and thawing resistance

Q. How does the use of pozzolan affect the resistance of concrete to freezing and thawing?

A.If the concrete contains sound aggregates and the specified amount of entrained air, and is cured to develop a compressive strength of about 24 MPa before many freezing and thawing cycles occur, its performance in freezing and thawing should be very satisfactory whether or not it contains a pozzolan.
