Troubleshooting Concrete Construction

This seminar will discuss the steps involved in concrete troubleshooting including: identifying symptoms that may affect the appearance or structural integrity of the material, collecting information, developing a preliminary diagnosis, conducting testing of the material properties, and confirming the diagnosis. The causes and solutions of common concrete problems will be examined.

Concrete Slabs-On-Ground

This seminar will provide an overview of concrete slabs-on-ground. Information regarding how to design, specify, and build quality concrete floors will be shared. Details regarding soil support systems including vapor transmission control, post-tensioning for expansive soils, and more will be discussed. The causes of joint curling and cracking and how this affects the design, materials, and construction of concrete floors will be discussed

Cement Physical Testing Technician

This certification program includes a review of those test methods associated with the physical testing of ordinary portland cement (ASTM C150) and the proper equipment necessary to perform these tests. Tests methods covered in the program include the following:

    • ASTM C109 Compressive Strength of Mortar
    • ASTM C151 Autoclave Expansion
    • ASTM C185 Air Content of Mortar
    • ASTM C187 Normal Consistency of Cement
    • ASTM C191 Time of Set of Hydraulic Cement
    • ASTM C1437 Flow Determination of Mortar
    • ASTM C204 Blaine Fineness
    • ASTM C230 Flow Table Requirements
    • ASTM C305 Mechanical Mixing of Pastes and Mortars
    • ASTM C430 #325 Sieve
    • ASTM C490 Practice for Determning Length Change

The scope of the proposed program includes a classroom review of each test standard/method, viewing of ACI’s DVD on cement testing procedures, and hands-on practice session in the laboratory. We will also discuss the importance of maintaining laboratory equipment and the impact bad equipment has on test results. On the last day of the program participants will take a written exam and demonstrate each test. An agenda for the program will be provided to those that enroll.

Who should attend?
Laboratory staff that test cement and cementitious materials, including new and experienced laboratory staff members, QA/QC supervisors and managers, laboratory supervisors, project managers, or anyone interested in the basics of testing cementitious materials.

Instructor:
Michael Morrison is Manager, Certification Program Development, for ACI. Has 35 years’ experience in construction materials testing area with 18 years of experience supervising or performing physical tests for cement, he has trained more than 125 cement testers in the last 20 years.

Program Handouts
ACI Workbook with program requirements, study questions, performance checklists, practice test and articles about physical testing of cement. It does not include any of the program specific ASTM standards. Each attendee must bring their own copies of all required ASTM standards.
