An Introduction to Concrete Segmental Bridges

October 22, 2025 to October 22, 2025
Starting Time:   1pm EST
End Time:   2pm EST

online
Sponsor(s): National Concrete Bridge Council

Description:
This presentation offers an overview of concrete segmental bridge technology and its current applications in bridge construction. It begins with the American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI) and its mission to educate and support stakeholders in the advancement of segmental bridge technology. The presentation lists ASBI’s resources, such as certification programs, technical publications, and industry durability surveys. Attendees are introduced to principles of segmental bridge design, construction methods including span-by-span and balanced cantilever, and equipment used for segment erection. Several project examples demonstrate how segmental construction addresses various environmental, geometric, and logistical considerations. Durability data from ASBI’s recent survey reports the condition ratings of segmental bridges. The presentation ends by outlining the characteristics of segmental construction—such as appearance, speed, maintenance requirements, and resilience—for infrastructure projects.
