Dam


Dams are of two general types: overflow dams, and non-overflow dams. Overflow dams block flow in a stream to harness the water for generating power or to improve navigation and provide irrigation water. Non-overflow dams store water for drinking water supply, irrigation, or power. Concrete dams are built in four basic shapes: the concrete gravity dam; the concrete buttress dam; the arch dam; and the arch-gravity dam.
