Technical Questions

ACI Committees, Membership, and Staff have answered common questions on a variety of concrete related topics.

What are the essential requirements of consistency?

Q. What are the essential requirements of consistency?

A. The consistency should always be such that the concrete can be placed and consolidated to form an adequately homogeneous mass without separation of the ingredients. For economy, the lowest slump that can be placed properly should always be used. With the w/cm fixed, any increase in slump will require increases in the cementitious material and water contents or the air content. Use of water-reducing admixtures, however, can provide the necessary workability without changing the proportions.
