The ultimate objective in proportioning concrete

Q. What is the ultimate objective in proportioning the ingredients in concrete?

A. To find the combination of cementitious material, water, and aggregate that meets the requirements of a particular structure, portion of a structure, or series of structures at least cost. Correct proportioning should produce concrete with:

- Adequate workability for proper mixing, transporting, placing, consolidating, and finishing.

- Adequate strength, resistance to degradation, and dimensional stability for the purpose intended.
