Detailed Webinar Instructions
Description
This webinar is Part 3 of a six-part series on the finite element method (FEM) for approximate structural analysis. The series presents practical concepts for linear elastic finite element analysis of structures, including preprocessing, analysis, and post-processing. The series is intended to bridge mathematical concepts and physical engineering behavior so practitioners can better evaluate finite element structural models and analysis results. Viewing the previous parts is encouraged but not required.
Part 3 focuses on finite element meshing parameters and modeling considerations. Topics include aspect ratio, corner angles, Jacobian ratio, warping, skewness, and folding factors. The webinar also addresses common modeling features and assumptions, including centerline modeling, edge effects, virtual and artificial elements, rigid diaphragms, shear wall–frame interaction, eccentric loading, load distribution, and verification of mesh geometry and input data.
Table of Contents
Learning objectives:
1. Describe structural domains and common meshing techniques used in finite element modeling.
2. Explain key mesh quality parameters, including aspect ratio, corner angles, Jacobian ratio, warping, skewness, and folding factors.
3. Identify common finite element modeling features, including centerline modeling, edge effects, artificial elements, rigid diaphragms, shear wall–frame interaction, eccentric loading, and load distribution.
4. Evaluate finite element mesh geometry and input data for consistency with the intended structural model
