Detailed Webinar Instructions

Description

With the rise of the use of additively constructed concrete (ACC), or 3D printed concrete (3DPC), as a structural material to resist applied loading, engineers have been posed with the task of determining how to test this material to assure appropriate performance of ACC. Given the material’s known differences with respect to conventionally placed concrete (e.g., anisotropic compressive strength behavior, inherent weak points at interfaces between subsequently constructed layers, voids and potential regions for water ingress at interfaces) require both extracted material testing approaches and structural-scale validation. This webinar features two complimentary presentations. The first will discuss testing methods completed to date on extracted sawn ACC including compressive strength, interface tension behavior and durability tests for volumetric changes associated with shrinkage. The presentation will discuss the application and modification of existing ASTM test methods, challenges associated with specimen extraction and preparation, and drawbacks associated with such testing. The second presentation will address out-of-plane structural wall testing of ACC systems, emphasizing experimental evaluation of wall behavior under applied loading. This portion will focus on validation of test results against design assumptions, identification of critical failure modes and load paths, and determination of key strength parameters used in structural design.

Table of Contents

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the current state of practice for mechanical testing of extracted additively constructed concrete (ACC) specimens.

2. Explain the effort, labor, and practical constraints associated with mechanical testing of extracted ACC specimens to inform specification and design documentation decisions.

3. Identify common modifications to existing ASTM test methods when applied to extracted ACC specimens and the rationale for those modifications.

4. Relate material-level test results from extracted ACC specimens to structural performance considerations, including critical failure modes and load paths.
