Description

The application of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) has significantly expanded in the last several years, complimented by the publication of various guides and reports by ACI Committee 544 – Fiber Reinforced Concrete. In this course, project case studies will be presented in which fiber reinforcement has fully or partially replaced reinforcing bars in concrete, allowing optimization of construction time and procedures. Presentations include basics of design for FRC and construction practices. Examples are industrial slabs-on-ground, light-rail track slabs, residential concrete basement walls, precast concrete tunnel segments, elevated concrete slabs with combined fiber and reinforcing bar reinforcement. This course will be useful for students, engineers, contractors, suppliers, testing labs, and government officials.

Table of Contents

Learning Objectives

1. Explain the basics and advantages of fiber-reinforced concrete use in slab-on-ground applications when compared to deformed-bar or wire reinforcement.

2. Review case studies of projects that used fiber reinforcement to improve concrete performance.

3. Discuss how fibers in concrete can be used to optimize the construction process, including improving scheduling and increasing production of steel fiber-reinforced slab-on-ground.

4. Identify methods to use steel fibers in combination with deformed-bar reinforcement to design supported slabs on piles or other types of supports.
