Notes/Preview

The contents of this course include three recorded presentations from the ACI 2019 Spring Convention:

• Tsunami-Induced Hydrodynamic and Debris Loading on Structures, by Ioan Nistor, University of Ottawa, Jacob Stolle, University of Ottawa; Nils Goseberg, Leichtweiss Institute; and Murat Saatcioglu, University of Ottawa

• Structural Performance of Aged Bridge Reinforced Concrete Columns Subjected to Extreme Lateral Loads, by Husham Almansour, National Research Council Canada; and Amina Mohammed, University of Ottawa

• Near Fault or Long-Duration Earthquakes—Which is More Devastating for Highway Bridges? by AHM Muntasir Billah, Lakehead University

INSTRUCTIONS: Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.1 CEU (equivalent to 1.0 PDH). This online course is not approved for credit with the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB).

Description

The main objective of this course is to present results from recent research studies (experimental/numerical/analytical) and field examples. In this course, engineers and researchers share and discuss various issues related to design and construction issues of RC columns under extreme events. The presentations in this course describe the performance of reinforced concrete columns for buildings or bridges during extreme events such as earthquake, tsunami, vehicular impact, corrosion, high temperature differential, freezing-and-thawing cycles, and ice load impact. Challenges from inspection to design and constructions will be discussed and possible solutions to improve their performance will be debated

Learning Objectives

1. Explain characteristics of tsunami debris flow as large ocean waves inundate inland.

2. Describe status of building code standards that are being developed to help provide guidance to designing structures to help resist tsunami floods and flowing debris.

3. Recall the effect that rising flood water has in the deterioration of concrete bridge overpass infrastructures including bridge piers, columns, and bridge decks.

4. Discuss characteristics of long duration earthquakes and short duration earthquakes, and damage characteristics they have on concrete structures.
