The contents of this course include three recorded presentations from the ACI 2018 Fall Convention:

• What Aggregate Characteristics Are Not Specified but Really Affect Concrete Performance? by Jussara Tanesi, SES Group Associates, LLC; Dale Bentz, National Institute of Standards and Technology; Ahmad Ardani, FHWA Transportation; and Mengesha Beyene, SES Group and Association, LLC

• Proportioning of Normal Concrete Mixes: Influence of Cement Content on Durability by Emilio Garcia-Taengua, University of Leeds, England, UK

• Performance-Based Mixture Proportioning, by Peter Taylor, Iowa State University

INSTRUCTIONS: Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.10 CEU (equivalent to 1.0 PDH). This online course is not approved for credit with the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB).

Description

This course provides an overview on characteristics of aggregates used in concrete mixtures, including estimating modulus of elasticity of the concrete with different types of aggregates. This course also explains the qualities of cement paste with regards to air void systems, water-cementitious materials ratios, and how changing these qualities affects the durability and workability of placed concrete. Also discussed is mixture proportioning through the ready mixed concrete perspective, including procedures to standardize mixtures, material sourcing issues, and delivering concrete within specification tolerances, such as within the 90-minute delivery time, and with proper slump at delivery point.

Table of Contents

Learning objectives:

1. Describe how characteristics of aggregates can affect the strength of concrete and the modulus of elasticity of concrete.

2. Explain the characteristics of concrete made with different water-cementitious materials ratios as it relates to slump and concrete strength.

3. Explain characteristics of concrete mixture materials and proportion of materials to produce concrete that resists different environmental exposure conditions, such as freezing and thawing and de-icing salts.

4. Discuss choosing parameters in concrete mixtures to resist different environmental exposures such as cement type, water cementitious ratios, aggregate system, and air void system, and ways prescriptive concrete specifications can be less efficient in obtaining needed workability and durability performance.
