Description

This course is jointly sponsored by NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

This course will cover information on how to design GFRP-reinforced concrete members to satisfy serviceability and flexural requirements in beams and one-way slabs per ACI 440.11-22. Concepts including short-term and long-term deflections, bar spacing for crack control, limits on sustained-load stress (i.e., creep rupture), temperature and shrinkage reinforcement, and nominal flexural strength for both tension-controlled and compression-controlled failure modes will be discussed. Concepts will be applied using an example to demonstrate both serviceability and strength design criteria.

Table of Contents

Learning Objectives:

1. Interpret the basic mechanics of GFRP-reinforced concrete in flexure and how that behavior compares to steel-reinforced concrete.

2. Understand the implementation of GFRP-reinforced concrete mechanics at the service load level.

3. Understand the implementation of GFRP-reinforced concrete mechanics at the ultimate load level.

4. Use code requirements to design beams and one-way slabs reinforced with GFRP.
