Description
This is a recorded webinar from November 19, 2025.
This webinar is jointly sponsored by NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).
Anchoring to concrete is a common structural application in new and repair construction. The use of post-installed glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bars or anchors for connecting concrete placed at different times can provide a durable structural solution when constructing in environments exposed to seawater, deicing salts, and stray electrical current. However, current codes lack guidance for the design of post-installed GFRP bars or anchors using structural adhesive. Drawing from over 400 experimental tests and comparative analysis with ACI 318 provisions for steel anchors, the session explores failure modes, bond behavior, and design strengths specific to post-installed GFRP adhesive bars or anchors. Attendees will gain insight into practical applications, research gaps, and draft code language tailored for GFRP adhesive anchors. This presentation is ideal for engineers, researchers, and code developers seeking to advance non-metallic anchorage solutions in concrete construction.
Table of Contents
Learning objectives:
1. Identify practical applications and design scenarios where GFRP adhesive anchors may offer advantages in durability, corrosion resistance, and structural performance.
2. Describe failure modes and design approaches for post-installed adhesive anchors.
3. Interpret experimental findings and mechanical behavior of GFRP adhesive anchors in tension and shear from a comprehensive database, including comparisons to steel anchor performance.
4. Explore the current limitations in design codes and understand the need for dedicated provisions for post-installed GFRP adhesive anchors in ACI 440.11.
