Abstract:
The Chicago subway design work was started Octo- ber 1938, and at the end of 1940 the tunnel work was 85 percent and the station work 35 percent complete. The entire project is essentially one of tunnel con- struction. Conditions at the start of the project and the design work that was accomplished since that time are described. First a general description of the work and brief review of some of the essential structures. The remainder of the paper describes the structural design of the work, with special emphasis on the concrete design of the different tunnel sections.
