Abstract:
Construction and trade practices in England, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Denmark are depicted. Particular attention is giiven reconstruction of the Havre pier by Freyssinet, employing treatedconcrete (proper mix, vi bration, pressure, pre-stressed steel) and other of his unique developments. Long-span hollow-membered bridges, continuity in building frames, thin walls in industrial and commercial buildings, and shell construction contrast European and American engineering practices.System of contracting and laws peculiar to Europe are compared with those of America, accounting for cost differences.
