Abstract: Summarizes results of column tests sponsored by ACI and made at Lehigh University and the University of Illinois. A general equation Is given for estimating the ultimate strength of any axially loaded concrete column. The effect of plastic flow and shrinkage are discussed. Design formulas for spiral and tied columns are proposed and other general design provisions formulated.
