Abstract:
A comparison of beams with different types of web reinforcement shows that bars inclined at 45 deg to the axis of the beam are most effective in resisting the diagonal tension stresses. To offer full protection from shear, how-ever, the use of vertical stirrups and bent-up bars combined is preferable. The alternative of orthogonal web reinforcement, consisting of vertical stirrups and horizontal bars at, and possibly also below, the neutral axis, is dis-cussed and experimental data are presented.
