Abstract:
The analysis of tanks resting on flat rigid supportsi is complicated by the nonlinear behavior of the base slab which is due to the change of support conditions with variations in loading. The partial loss of contact between the floor slab and the rigid support influences the magnitude of the bending moments developed in the tank. Since theprinciple of superposition is no longer valid the extent of this loss of contact cannot be determined directly. The paper describes a method of analysis which employs a technique of successive corrections whereby the final bending moment distribution is determined accurately and rapidly after a few iterations.
