Abstract:
Presents a method for the rational design of reinforced concrete chimneys or other similar structures (e.g., cement silos, tanks for warm liquids, cooling towers) subject to the effects of a thermal gradient. The loads acting on the structure are divided into general loads external moment of wind or earthquake, shear and vertical loads) and local loads (thermal gradient, moments produced by internal corbels, ovaling, and solar radiation). The effects of these loads on the concrete, the vertical reinforcement, and the horizontal (annular) reinforcement are investigated with the aid of tables to obtain the significant stresses. A numerical example is included.
