Abstract:The paper presents a study of the plasticity in hinging regions of reinforced concrete continuous beams with parabolic soffits and the effect of shear on the rotational capacity under different moment gradients. The theoretical analysis is based on a bilinear moment-curvature relationship and a parabolic-straight line stress-strain curve of concrete avoiding the assumption of invariance of member stiffness. The agreement of results is close and recommendations are made for the permissible redistribution of moments, evaluation of rotational capacity, and the plastic hinge length based on the ACI and Indian standard codes for reinforced concrete.
