An analytical model is proposed to predict the cracking response and the tension-stiffening effect in a reinforced concrete member subjected to uniaxial tension. Instead of assuming a bond stress versus slip relationship, a function was assumed to represent the bond stress distribution. To check the validity of the analytical predictions, an experimental investigation was conducted on reinforced mortar specimens subjected to uniaxial tension. Measurements of elongations and crack widths were made during testing. The results of the theoretical predictions were also compared satisfactorily with some available experimental data on reinforced concrete prisms. The proposed method can be used in the application of finite element method to analyze the behavior of reinforced concrete members.
