Abstract:
A large portion of older buildings in North America are constructed with stone masonry load‐bearing walls, built prior to modern codes. While such walls have historically performed well under gravity loads, they are highly susceptible to failure and collapse under the effects of out‐of‐plane loads, such as those caused by blast. In addition, failure of such walls can result in high‐speed blast fragments, which can injure building occupants. This study examines the potential of using carbon fiber reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites to retrofit unreinforced stone masonry walls against blast loads. As part of the study, two stone load‐bearing walls (one control and one retrofit) were tested under gradually increasing blast pressures using a shock‐tube. The results demonstrate that carbon FRCM composites can be used to significantly enhance the out‐of‐plane blast resistance of load‐bearing stone masonry walls.
