Abstract:
This paper examines the influence of high-strength reinforcement and steel fibers on the blast performance of high-strength concrete (HSC) columns. As part of the study, a series of fiber-reinforced HSC columns built with Grade 100 (690 MPa) high-strength bars are tested under simulated blast loads using a high-capacity shock-tube at the University of Ottawa. The performance of the columns is examined by comparing their behavior to that of a companion set of columns built with plain HSC and conventional (Grade 400 MPa) reinforcement. The results show that the combined use of steel fibers and high-strength reinforcement results in important enhancements in blast performance, with improved control of mid-span displacements at equivalent blasts and increased blast capacity.
