Even a cursory investigation into the causes and prevention of plastic shrinkage cracking in concrete will invariably lead to the nomograph for estimating the rate of evaporation of surface moisture from concrete (for example: ACI 305R – Guide to Hot Weather Concreting) and Menzel’s formula used in creating the nomograph. So, who is Menzel and how did he come up with the formula that is used so widely today? Carl A. Menzel (1894 – 1987) was an avid materials researcher. He worked at the Forest Products Laboratory, Underwriter's Laboratories and the Portland Cement Association. His research areas included humidity testing in wood drying kilns, fire resistance and strength of concrete masonry, the use of portland cement as a binder in foundry molding sand, an autoclave testing apparatus, the performance of concrete reinforcing bars, the moisture content of concrete, and concrete and steel bonding. Menzel received awards from the American Society for Testing and Materials and the American Concrete Institute.
