Abstract:
A unified performance-based design approach for precast concrete insulated wall panels subjected to blast loading is presented. Contrary to conventional blast design methods for insulated wall panels, this approach integrates partially-composite resistance functions and component-specific response limits which facilitate enhanced generalized single degree of freedom (SDOF) dynamic analyses. Direct correlations between panel constitutive properties and critical response milestones are used as the basis for calculating performance-based limit states, which are dependent upon the geometry of the concrete wythes, shear tie configuration and material properties. The performance of foam insulation and shear ties under high strain rate loading and their influence on the overall response of the panels will be examined. A parametric study is conducted to determine which constituents or design parameters have the greatest influence on critical panel response milestones. Comparisons of SDOF analyses incorporating the proposed approach and conventional blast design methodologies are also shown. This approach represents an effective way to design and analyze precast concrete insulated wall panels subjected to blast loading and facilitates component level detailing and innovation when targeting a component-specific response.
