Abstract:
Chloride ingress into cracked and uncracked concrete was determined for OPC and several alternative cementitious systems with w/cm ratios of 0.40, and 1.5 inches of cover over the bar at the crack location. The chloride profiles at the crack versus the uncracked concrete is significantly affected by the cementitious system used. Other tests with only OPC showed that the steel reinforcement used affects the ingress of chloride beyond the first mat of steel. The results are compared to some earlier studies that show the effects of concrete cover, w/c, and crack size on corrosion and chloride ingress. The goal is to utilize these studies to develop a probabilistic model to include crack width and length in determining the time to a given percentage of corrosion.
