Abstract:
Hato Rey viaduct for the Tren Urbano Project in San Juan de Puerto Rico Metropolitan Area, 3678 m long, is one of the longest viaducts in the world built with precast segments. The alignment in an urban context determines the location of the piers which implies a configuration with different span lengths, curves and several sections for both dual and single track. These requirements make it feasible only the solution of an aerial guideway with precast box girder segments and external prestressing to be erected with girders, to avoid the shuttering on the streets needed in case of other construction methods. Station platforms are also designed with precast prestressed box girders. Piers are designed as single columns or cast in place bents. All the foundations are with either precast driven piles or cast-in-place piles up to a maximun of 2,40 m in diameter and 22,00 m in length.
