Abstract:
Performance-based design procedures include a set of Limit States that the designer has to apply in order to produce an adequate seismic resistant building. However, nowadays it is difficult to incorporate these Limit States into conventional seismic code procedures. This paper studies the objective determination of the damage threshold for some specific Limit States by using criteria based on the interstory drift computed from the non-linear response of reinforced concrete framed buildings, designed according to EC-2 and EC-8 provisions. The results show that the values of the thresholds of damage are practically independent of the height of the building and that can be incorporated into the design process in a rational way, correlating the damage thresholds with seismic damage index, in order to obtain an efficient assessment of the seismic response of the framed reinforced concrete buildings.
