The Öresund Link a double link, road and rail, over the Straits of Öresund between Denmark and Sweden, was inaugurated in July of 2000, making a reality a long dream of more than 100 years. Grupo Dragados, S.A. supplied the spans of the two approach bridges to the cable stayed main one, 6,7 km of total length by means of 42 spans 140 m long and y 7 spans 120 m long. The bridge is a composite structure of a steel truss and a prestressed concrete deck. Innovated tests and the latest and in the design and construction to guarantee durability longer than 100 years in very severe climatic conditions. Construction was started in 1995. Traffic will flow on two levels: the upper one for road vehicles is a four-lane motorway with two extra emergency lanes, and the lower level a double rail track with a service footpath at each side. The total link length is a little over 16 km long, from the Danish coast at Kastrup near the Copenhagen Airport to the Swedish coast at Lernacken near Malmö. The spans were constructed in Cadiz in the south coast of Spain near the Gibraltar Strait and were transported by sea in pairs over a big barge to Malmö, where the main contractor placed them in position over the pylons. The crucial problem of developing a type of concrete suitable for this project without precedents in Spain was satisfactorily solved by a team of experts in concrete technology that was formed for this purpose.
