Abstract:
The present tendency to build very long viaducts, due to the outcome of stricter quality standards for road and railway infrastructure and more stringent environmental constraints, has led to the need to industrialize the construction of these large-scale structures. While the use of precast segments to build bridge decks is common practice the world over, the system has been rather scantly implemented in Spain. It was nonetheless chosen for both the 75-metre approach spans and the 160-metre main spans comprising the Navia Viaduct. Providing for a structurally continuous deck and using the same elements throughout simplified manufacture and assembly while reducing building time and costs. The design and construction of the Navia Viaduct forms part of one of FCC Construcción?s lines of activity: the precast segmental construction of bridges, initially intended for structures with medium-sized spans but applied in this case to a long-span viaduct.
