Title: Voided Slabs
Author(s): Mike Mota
Publication: Concrete International
Appears on pages(s): 41-45
Keywords: voided slabs, precast concrete, hollow-core slabs, span
Abstract:Voided slabs, using voids formed by permanent fillers or removable forms, have been used in reinforced concrete floor systems for more than 100 years. The concept is simple: remove concrete mass from areas in the slab where it’s not needed to resist load. As a result of the reduced dead load, voided slabs can span further than their solid counterparts. This article provides a partial review of some early and contemporary systems and concludes with a discussion of a relatively new advancement.
