Abstract:
A five-story, 345,000 ft2 (32,050 m2) student housing facility was built atop a three level, 600 x 270 ft (183 x 83 m), 1017-space parking structure. Although the post-tensioned parking structure had only one expansion joint, the design and construction team was able to construct the structure using no pour strips. Instead, shrinkage compensating concrete (SCC) was used to minimize slab cracking and reduce the construction schedule. Unique aspects of the analysis, design, and construction of the structures are described, with particular emphasis on the effects of SCC. Strain measurements from the structure and test blocks show that after an initial expansion, the SCC exhibited less shrinkage than would be predicted for a normal concrete mixture.
